Website Domain Registration

A lot of people don't understand the process of a website domain registration. A good domain name brings a lot of visitors. It should always be simple and easy to remember.

Your domain should tell your visitors what your site is about. It doesn't matter if it's long or short. What matters that your domain name must talk about your site.

For example let's take a look at my site steps-to-create-a-website.com, the domain itself talks about the website. It clearly tells the visitors that this site is about website creation. It also helps me ranking in the search engines for my specific keywords. You should always follow some rules when choosing a domain name.

Domain names are usually very cheap. You can find one for about 10$/year. In my opinion it is better to get the domain name and web hosting from the same provider as it's much easier to manage.

Some people make the mistake of getting free domain name. Let's say if you get one from Yahoo! Geocities. You are not getting a domain but a sub-domain. Which means that their name would be included on your domain and would look like www.geocities.com/yourname.

There are some major disadvantageous of sub-domain. First of all, you will lose credibility as it looks unprofessional and amateur.

And the second thing is 99% of the time, you won't get more than 20 visitors a day. The rate of returning traffic will be next to nothing because the domain is too long to remember.

As well as the search engines won't find you a reliable source either and won't give you a high ranking. These are the key elements of website domain registration.

Some beginners get multiple domain names for a website such as yoursite.com, yoursite.net, yoursite.info, etc. Well it does not necessarily protect your competition as the domain providers show.

But it is certainly useful if your site is really popular and gets millions of visitors everyday but other than that it is not really necessary to do.

You can still do it. There is nothing wrong and it won't effect your search engines ranking but it's not something mandatory.

If for some reason in future you don't like your domain name, you can always get a new domain name and forward all your visitors from the old one.

But always think wisely before doing your website domain registration. Keep in mind that you have two customers to please: search engine spiders and human visitors.
