How to register for a domain name

There are some simple basic rules you need to follow when you register for a domain name.

Webmasters often avoid these steps when building a website. But if you follow these rules, it will give much higher ranking in search engines.

Choosing the right domain name is really important for your human visitors as well. Your domain name should be simple and easy to remember.

You should make it as short as possible. But if for some reason the domain name you want is taken, try to add a word or two with it.

Always choose your site's topic before you register for a domain name. After you have chosen the topic, brainstorm the keywords. Once you are done with these process, then select your main keyword.

Your main specific keyword should be added on your domain name. This is really important for good search engine ranking.

In other words, your visitors should be able to predict what your website is about from your domain.

Make it easy to remember. If possible keep it from 1-3 words. When you register for a domain name, you should always keep 2 thing in mind: search engines and human visitors. Make it easy for both of them.

If your site's topic is about Toronto, then you might be looking for toronto.com or toronto.net.

In case if these are taken, add another word or two with it such as toronto-city.com or discover-toronto-city.com. Always look for a solution.

In some cases you might need to make it longer if you can't find anything with your keyword. For example look at my domain name steps-to-create-a-website.com. I could not find any domain name related to my keyword so I decided to add a few words. I made it clear for both my human visitors and search engines that what my site is about.

It's a bit long but quite easy to remember. Anyone can easily tell that my site is about website creation just by looking at my domain name.

One more thing you have to remember that your domain should always end up with either ".com" or ".net". Do not use ".org" if your site is not about an organization.

If your site is about music then use ".fm". They are usually more expensive but very popular nowadays for music websites. But make sure that your domain name consists your main keyword.
